What are you reading right now?
The Year’s Best Science Fiction 25th Annual Collection, edited by Gardner Duzois. I love sci-fi because it is a glimpse of the future. Have you noticed that early flip-top cell phones looked a lot like the commuication device used by Captain Kirk in Star Trek?
What’s your idea of a perfect vacation?
Kayaking, hiking and camping – I am dreaming of going to Vancouver – I like roughing it for the adventure and the quiet.
What’s your comfort food?
Popcorn. No butter. Lots of it. Freshly popped.
Have you gone to any great shows lately?
Yes – I watched SHINE from Netflix.
What gets you out of your comfort zone, creatively speaking?
Walker Art Center or other modern art collections. If I am uncomfortable then I’m thinking and reacting.
What keeps you inspired?
Color – color is so amazing – I was going blind from cataracts at an early age and then I had surgery with replacement lenses and rediscovered how intoxicating color can be.
Do you think creating art in a small community affects your style?
No. I think isolation from other artists is more of a problem. I miss having regular contact with other artists. I would love to have weekly or monthly gatherings of local artists focused a particular topic for discussion – like I had with the Visual Arts Focus Group in Minneapolis, now disbanded.
